POSITION DESCRIPTION
SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER
TITLE: School Social Worker
DEFINITION: Responsible for providing services to students with social-emotional problems which interfere with their adjustment and achievement in school.
Reports to Assistant Principal responsible for Pupil Personnel Services.
POLICY
RESPONSIBILITY: Recommends best practice standards for school social work services, including mandated federal, state and district policies relative to those services. Responsible for following published policies and practices.
KEY FUNCTIONS:
A. Student Services to promote optimum student success in the educational setting.
A/R: Provide direct services to students with social-emotional problems.
Representative Activities:
1. Provide information to parents about the effect of social-emotional factors on educational success. Suggest to parents how to effectively participate in obtaining educational services for their child.
2. Provide consultation and in-service to school personnel.
3. Assist school personnel in understanding the role of the school social worker.
4. Promote awareness and sensitivity to cultural diversity.
5. Act in accordance with federal, state, district and school policies and practices.
6. Serve as liaison between school, home and community agencies serving in the best interest of the student. Make home visits as necessary.
7. Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy, and/or administration.
8. Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as defined by the contract.
9. Prepares reports as required by the school and/or district.
10. Consults with teachers and administrations on broad areas of mental health.
B. Case Study Process
A/R: Performs functions mandated in laws regarding special education including but not limited to, social developmental studies evaluation and reevaluation.
Representative Activities:
1. Conduct interview and consultations for the purpose of preparing social developmental studies.
2. Assess student adaptive behavior skills.
3. Assess cultural background.
4. Participates in intake and multidisciplinary conferences.
5. Participates in identification students requiring social work intervention.
6. Facilitate communication of parent rights concerning the student’s education.
C. Crisis Intervention
A/R: Alleviate the impact of crises and help mobilize school and community resources.
Representative Activities:
1. Report suspected child abuse and neglect and cooperate in the subsequent DCFS investigation when requested.
2. Apply crisis management principles to classroom and family intervention situations.
3. Provide appropriate assistance along with other staff students and school personnel in crises situations.
